Two historic game changing events took place yesterday. The election and a changes in what represents an entirely new path in telecommunications.

“In its continuing efforts to promote efficient use of spectrum and to extend the benefits of such use to the public, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today adopted a Second Report and Order (Second R&O) that establishes rules to allow new, sophisticated wireless devices to operate in broadcast television spectrum on a secondary basis at locations where that spectrum is open. (This unused TV spectrum is now commonly referred to as television “white spaces”). The rules adopted today will allow for the use of these new and innovative types of unlicensed devices in the unused spectrum to provide broadband data and other services for consumers and businesses. ”

* Both fixed and personal portable devices will be allowed. So look for base stations on cell towers as well as next generation PDAs and multi-media devices.

* Personal portable devices will be allowed to operate at power levels up to 40mW.

* On non-adjacent channels (i.e., where you have three unoccupied TV channels in a row, this would be the middle channel), higher power levels will be allowed (up to 100mW).

* Unlicensed wireless microphones will not receive priority status except, potentially, on channels 2-4. On all other channels (through to channel 51), all devices will share secondary status to primary broadcasters (e.g., television stations and licensed microphones).

* A geolocational database will back up spectrum sensing capabilities to ensure WSDs do not operate in restricted areas. Left unclear is whether licensed wireless microphone users will be allowed to exempt their venue from WSD use and whether this would also allow for unlicensed wireless microphone users to do likewise.

* A Notice of Inquiry will be launched by the FCC to investigate higher-powered use as an additional service in areas with few digital TV stations. This would facilitate backhaul capabilities for WISPs and other service providers.

“Sweden-based telecoms manufacturer, Ericsson, is working with chipset provider, Intel, to put cutting edge mobile broadband technology into handheld devices.

The two companies are collaborating to put HSPA mobile data solutions inside Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs), expanding Ericsson’s 3.5G mobile broadband product range.

MIDs are pocket sized devices that offer a PC style internet experience.

They incorporate entertainment and media with GPS navigation, social networking, online gaming, instant messaging and productivity tools.

The HSPA MID devices will be released by Ericsson sometime in 2009/10.

Buckypaper is a thin sheet made from an aggregate of carbon nanotubes.[1] The nanotubes are approximately 50,000 times thinner than a human hair.[1] Originally, it was fabricated as a way to handle carbon nanotubes, but in 2008 is being studied and developed into applications by several research groups, showing promise as a building material for aerospace vehicles, body armor and next-generation electronics and displays.

Buckypaper is a macroscopic aggregate of carbon nanotubes, or “buckytubes”. The idea for buckypaper came when British scientist Harry Kroto and Rice University scientists were attempting to create the conditions found in a star when it forms elemental carbon. It owes its name to buckminsterfullerene, the 60 carbon fullerene (an allotrope of carbon with similar bonding that is sometimes referred to as a “Buckyball” in honor of R. Buckminster Fuller).

Some Facts:

* If exposed to an electric charge, buckypaper could be used to illuminate computer and television screens. It would be more energy-efficient, lighter, and would allow for a more uniform level of brightness than current cathode ray tube (CRT) and liquid crystal display (LCD) technology.

* As one of the most thermally conductive materials known, buckypaper lends itself to the development of heat sinks that would allow computers and other electronic equipment to disperse heat more efficiently than is currently possible. This, in turn, could lead to even greater advances in electronic miniaturization.

* Because it has an unusually high current-carrying capacity, a film made from buckypaper could be applied to the exteriors of airplanes. Lightning strikes then would flow around the plane and dissipate without causing damage.

* Films also could protect electronic circuits and devices within airplanes from electromagnetic interference, which can damage equipment and alter settings. Similarly, such films could allow military aircraft to shield their electromagnetic “signatures,” which can be detected via radar.

If you spend much time driving in unfamiliar territory, especially if you rent cars in big cities, a good portable GPS makes an amazing difference. And the Garmin 255W is the best one I could find in the $250 – $350 range.

First this thing just plain works. I haven’t had any issues with mine. It was easy to set up and figure out right out of the box, and it’s easy to use. It never has had trouble getting sufficient signal unlike earlier and cheaper models.

I chose the 255W for several reasons: It uses some of the newest and best maps available. It has one of the more usable touch screens for entering destinations. It’s fast to acquire satellites. And Garmin almost always comes out on top in reviews–especially in routing.

Ultimately, you buy a car GPS to get you from Point A to Point B as easily and efficiently as possible. And that’s what the 255W does best. If you’ve ever had a “Brand X” GPS take you on some strange route that adds 20 minutes to your trip, has you turn the wrong way down a one way road, tell you to turn AFTER you’ve passed the street, frequently loses the satellite signal, or has old maps missing streets, you know how important this stuff is.

The 255W has a really clear display that’s easy to see in any light. It’s small enough to use on foot. The windshield mount works great and it’s easy to toss in the glovebox when you park. It even tells you the speed limit on most roads. The “points of interest” feature works very well to find places to eat by type of cuisine, gas stations, etc.

The difference between the 255W and 205W is the 255 speaks street names and includes Alaska and Canada. The 205 and 205W will tell you to “turn right in 500 feet” which isn’t as helpful or obvious as “turn right on Ivy Street in 500 feet”. The “W” models are widescreen which makes entering destinations easier due to having a bigger “keyboard” and also lets you see more map area while driving.

All in all this isn’t the cheapest GPS in its class but it’s one of the best. My only gripe is you need an expensive add-on to get live traffic data–something that’s included with the Magellan Roadmate 1430 which is close to the same price. But the Garmin 255W is a better GPS in every other way.

Location Based-Enhanced Social Network

I have been using a few iPhone apps that do the same thing like ‘Around Me’ and ‘Yelp’ but I am very curious about a Google/Android powered app. There is much more room for improvement in this space. I can see something like BrightKite and Yelp as a combined solution with street-view in the mix as well.

Iris Scan Login

The 3MP camera is able to get a good clear picture with a minimum distance of 2 inches away. The shutter better be fast so there is no blurry mess. Having to take a picture of my eye over, and over and over again is not going to fly. Couple that with the right lighting and subtle shifting – that is a lesson in frustration. I am not sure this is going to work.

For a few years I have been reading about how cities may be adding “hotzones” around their city which will offer visitors the ability to take virtual tours. Here is one more step in that direction. Very cool.

The ‘Family’ Tracker

I think there is a practical and even an ethical constraint on the validity of this app. It would be great to keep tabs on your 12 year old at the mall but anything beyond that is simply not right. This, or some variant of this technology, is going to get exploited.

I love Pandora. I got rid of my SAT radio because of Pandora. If you give me hook ins to Last.FM and give me some social browsers plugins – I am hooked. I want to see on a map what someone was listing to in the exact location I am standing in and then add them as a friend. Is that worth anything?

From the looks of this, it looks very nice. The resolution looks clean and bright. The only concern I have in these new open source mobiles is security. Opening up the OS can introduce malware and other nasties. Keeping things in a VM and locking the OS might work. People want their mobiles open, I am of course one of them, but there needs to be a filter (Hey Mr. Linus Torvalds, you busy?) ..to keep the integrity of these apps pure. Community filters may work in much the same way it works on bittorrent trackers.
